When social networks bring out new features, it is always worth writing about, especially when it comes to Google+. I personally feel that Google+ is still not as widely used as it should be in the SME sector, because businesses are still struggling to understand its features, and how to use them.

Making it easier for users to post, search and connect, Google+ have just introduced their redesign on all devices, including Android and iOS.

Google+ have not only updated their navigation, they have also updated their communities feature, and introduced collections.

What is Google+ Communities?

Google Communities are groups of users who share the same interests that come together to discover new content.

What is Collections?

Google+ Collections allows you to view content that is based on a specific topic and group them together. You can now create collections based on your interest and post videos/images. You can also find people through their collections, and allow people to find you through yours and customise your collections with names, and cover photo’s.

The redesign has brought both Google Communities and Collections to the forefront of the user interface to offer a simpler and more focused experience. Both of these features have been available for some time, but Google+ have only just released them as part of the redesign.

It isn’t just the introduction of Collections and Communities that is new. Google+ have also rejuvenated their home stream, so that the platform will not only load faster, but make it easier for users to find relevant content, at the right time.

Google+

“Whether it’s the Nonfiction Addiction Community, where people can be found discussing the best in Crime or Travel storytelling, or the Watch Project Collection, where more than 40,000 people are following an antique watch hobbyist, these are the places on Google+ where people around the world are spending their time discovering and sharing things they love.”

How Can You Access These New Features?

If you are accessing Google+ from the web, sign into your account and click the “let’s go” button when you are prompted to do so. If you don’t see the prompt, follow the below instructions;

  1. Go to your settings from the drop down menu on the left
  2. Select the “manage other apps & activity” option
  3. Select “manage Google+ activity”
  4. Click the search field at the top of the page and wait for the bar to turn grey
  5. Click the Google+ logo to go back to your home news feed
